The Robust Australopithecines
Australopithecus robustus was first discovered and named by the eminent Dr. Robert Broom when he purchased a maxillary fragment containing a first molar in 1938.
Initially discovered in 1959 by Mary Leakey (of the Australopithecus boisei specimen OH 5 (“Zinj”) in 1959, by Mary Leakey, was a watershed in the history of paleoanthropology.
The discovery of KNM-WT 17000 (the “Black Skull”) since classified as Australopithecus aethiopicus in 1986 proved to be an important part of the australopithecine puzzle.
